Is the future of rock ‘n roll…..female?
This is a question that I’ve been pondering quite a lot lately….and as 2021 continues to progress, I can’t help but believe that the answer to that question is a resounding yes.
Far be it from me to single out any particular gender for attention, but this year has seen a veritable avalanche of female Australian artists that have been smashing out world class singles by the truck load, and chalking up huge runs on the board for Australian artists in general.
Which brings us to the latest addition to that list with ‘Wannabe’, the current single from Melbourne’s Cassidy Paris.
An artist of Paris’ calibre may be what the rock genre has been looking for to break back into the mainstream, as ‘Wannabe’ has the commercial accessibility that’s needed for the casual music fan to latch on to, with the song being rock enough to excite fans of that genre, but also being commercially viable enough to not alienate the Tik Tok crowd.
It’s also a plus that ‘Wannabe’ holds a strong message of not succumbing to fads and selling your soul to what’s on trend (something we’ve all been guilty of).
‘Wannabe’ has a rock 'n roll heart wrapped in leather and studs that’s trapped in a pop princess's body, with just the right mixture of salt and sweet to lure you in before knocking you out with the sheer force of its personality…...kind of like a hot girl that elbows her way to the front of the queue at the bar, demanding to be served first….and no one complains!
‘Wannabe’ is by no means a groundbreaking track, but why does it need to be?
If it’s a crime to like a catchy song that ticks all the boxes and scratches you where you itch, then you’re as guilty as me for liking this song, and more power to ya for doing so!
Cassidy Paris is just the role model that young girls should be looking up to, and if ‘Wannabe’ inspires even more of them to pick up an instrument or a microphone, then the future of rock will truly be female!
