Let's cut to the chase, shall we?
Markus Saastamoinen is one hell of a talented artist. I've been a fan of his previous work as frontman for Degrees Of Separation, and also as the voice of his current group, Cirrus Crown, but I want to go on record as stating unequivocally and unquestionably that his debut solo album, 'Puzzle Pieces' is the best thing he's ever done!
This is the album that he's always had the potential to deliver, and on 'Puzzle Pieces' he delivers in spades.
Part 70's prog rock….part metal….part gospel….part concept album….part love letter to Queen….but all heart, 'Puzzle Pieces' may veer into schmaltzy sentimentality, but it's sure footed enough to right itself without dragging the whole enterprise down.
Saastamoinen has a voice that cuts to the very core of a song, like a hot knife through butter, not only emulating his hero, Freddie Mercury, but also at times sounding remarkably like Stryper's Michael Sweet.
The album's production is outstanding, and the musicianship on display is top notch, but it's the jaw dropping vocal harmonies that are worth the price of admission all on their own.
When the album rocks, it rocks HARD, with first single 'Puzzle Piece', and 'Truth, Lies & In Between' bringing the noise, but the album also explores an eclectic array of genres, from 50's style doo-wop ('Lullaby'), piano ballads ('A Strange Silence'), mini rock operas ('Clones', 'The Ballad Of San Sebastiån', & 'Chances Are'), and full blown acapella ('Bring Him Home')
'Puzzle Pieces' is just proof positive that 2020 may have been an awful year in many respects, but local music has never been stronger.
Outstanding!
