Melbourne’s Warbirds have an uncanny gift that many three piece hardrock acts seem to possess, and that’s the ability to jam pack a massive ear blistering sound within the confines of only three members.
The band has been very quiet on the recording front as of late, not releasing anything since their 2019 debut album ‘Order From Chaos’.
That’s all changed now that they’ve released not only their first single since 2018 (‘My Symphony’), but they’ve also re-released their 2017 EP ‘Control’ to digital platforms, which excludes ‘My Symphony’, but includes their 2021 single, ‘Take My Hand’.
‘Take My Hand’ is anchored by a grinding crunch of a riff that hits like a jackhammer, but cuts with laser guided precision, with devastating effect. The entire song pulses and radiates from the inside out, drawing the listener in and holding them in a vice-like grip, refusing to let up, and refusing to let go.
Guitarist and Vocalist, Anth Nekich is arguably one of the the most underrated players on the local scene, who has the ability to captivate and spellbind with a virtuoso display of guitar dexterity and panache which is well to the fore on this new track.
But the Warbirds frontman is also just as talented with his vocal as he is with the axe, conveying a muscular performance on ‘Take My Hand’. Not only is his delivery earth shaking, but he also has a crystal clarity to his voice that brings to mind another local artist, Markus Saastamoinen (frontman for Melbourne’s Cirrus Crown, and who also released his solo album, ‘Puzzle Pieces’ back in 2020).
The Warbirds engine room is in full swing on ‘Take My Hand’. Leroy Strapp (Drums) & Ben Stepp (Bass) unleash a fire and brimstone avalanche of bone crushing bottom end cacophony, that brings the pleasure and the pain, like a dominatrix that loves her job just a little too much!
I do have one small criticism which I can't overlook. The "yeeeeah" at the start of the song isn't the best of choices. I cringe every time I hear it. If it had been replaced by something stronger (or eliminated altogether), it would've lifted the initial impact of the song's beginning.
Apart from that very small hiccup, 'Take My Hand' is a belter!
Welcome back Warbirds…..2021 just got a little bit better!
